More Essential Life Skills for the ADHD personality:

Independence and Self-image

Encourage responsibility. Even though it may be tempting, try to stop doing everything for your child. Make them feel important and appreciated when they are doing the right thing. Parents acquiring  tools and concepts for encouraging  children who are grappling with negativity, is essential to developing their positive self-image for life.

Time Management

Children with ADHD do not always accurately judge how long tasks will take. When your child sits down to do an assignment, help him estimate how long it will take to finish. Then divide the time into manageable chunks, giving the sections names (first, second; base one, homerun;) and allow  for breaks in between tasks that allow for movement, music or a protein snack.

Organization

Help your son or daughter find an organizing-system that works for them: bins for their clothes; a shelf with baskets for the items they regularly use; use creative colorful solutions for structured learning and focusing. Resist the urge to nag your child. Learn how to break down tasks and goals into manageable units. This helps them to successfully start and finish projects and household tasks.

Smart Decision-making

The longer-term affect of ADHD symptoms can be unpredictable and could lead to developing risky or addictive behaviors as teenagers struggle to find themselves. These behaviors vary according to the child and the type of ADHD they are experiencing. Some have learning challenges, while others have a high IQ. Some suffer symptoms that include impulsivity and emotional outbursts, while others have poor decision-making and personal safety issues.

Parents who learn to provide open communication, understand the child’s challenges, and spend time (not only at home) with them building trust, attaches these highly emotional children to the earthly source of all safety and love–their parents. This, in conjunction with consistent, clear and loving boundaries over the years, during all the various stages of development, enforces healthy behaviors and respect for authentic authority figures.
